Damage caused by Russian strikes at the foot of the Motherland monument – photos
During a massive missile and drone attack on the night and morning of February 3, Russians damaged the Hall of Fame of the National Museum of the History of Ukraine in World War II at the foot of the Motherland monument. This was reported to by Deputy Prime Minister for Humanitarian Policy – Minister of Culture and Strategic Communications Tetiana Berezhna .
Currently, museum specialists, technical services and the police are working at the site. They are inspecting the area, recording the damage and the initial assessment of the damage. After the survey is completed, the scope of restoration work will be known .
"This is a monument of science and technology of local importance. It is symbolic and cynical at the same time: the aggressor state strikes at the place of memory of the fight against aggression in the 20th century, repeating crimes in the 21st century," Berezhna wrote .
The Motherland Monument was built in 1981, it is a monument of science and technology of local importance and is considered the tallest monumental sculpture in Europe.
In the summer of 2023, the shield of the Motherland monument was dismantled Soviet symbols. The hammer and sickle that had been hanging there for almost 40 years was replaced with the Emblem of Ukraine. Decommunization of the monument cost 28 million UAH.
In total, since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, Russia has damaged or destroyed more than 1,680 cultural heritage sites and thousands of cultural infrastructure facilities in Ukraine.
