Bulgaria's support for Ukraine and cooperation in the defense sector are important issues of national security for the EU country itself, said Radan Kanev, Member of the European Parliament from Bulgaria, in a commentary to LIGA.net on the sidelines of the 17th Annual Kyiv Security Forum.

According to a Bulgarian politician, the country is "very vulnerable" to security threats in an "extremely unstable" world. He believes that this situation will remain for the next decade.

"And in such a situation, having a very strong alliance and close relationship with what seems to be the strongest European army at the moment, the Ukrainian army, is a matter of our own security. I'm not sure that most Bulgarian politicians really see it that way, but I try to convince them as much as I can," he said.

According to Kanev, in the past there were "strong pro-Russian sentiments in Bulgaria" and this is a certain historical phenomenon. But after the outbreak of Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine, Bulgarian society changed its views.

"But now, if we look at how Bulgarians perceived Vladimir Putin: very positively 10 years ago and mostly negatively now. This shows a certain evolution in Bulgarian public opinion," the politician concluded.
