NATO wants to ‘satisfy’ Ukraine, its members at Vilnius summit - Euractiv

The NATO summit in Vilnius may result in closer relations and support for Ukraine, with some strings attached in the form of required reforms, to accommodate both its members and Ukraine, according to a Euractiv report, citing sources.

It is expected that the support package agreed upon by NATO leaders in July could include capacity building in defence planning, training armed forces, or investing in the Ukrainian defence industry, according to sources.

One senior NATO official told Euractiv that the NATO summit is expected to give a clearer indication to Kyiv to show the relationship is getting closer but still leaves room for more reforms.

"The trick will be to find a formula that satisfies everyone", they said.

NATO’s secretary general, Jens Stoltenberg, invited Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelenskyy to the Alliance's summit in Vilnius back in March.

Earlier today, the Financial Times reported that NATO foreign ministers gathered in Brussels were to discuss the doubling of commitments to the Ukraine comprehensive assistance package to €500 million per year.
