The United States will discuss with the Hungarian and Slovak authorities the rejection of Russian energy carriers. This was stated by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio before leaving for the Munich Security Conference, , the State Department's press service reports.

Rubio was asked if he was going to call on Hungary and Slovakia to stop buying Russian energy.

"Well, we will have these conversations with them. We'll talk to them about what needs to happen," he said .

At the same time, the US Secretary of State emphasized that he was not going to go into details about what will be discussed at the meetings.

"But most of all, these are countries that work very closely with us, work very closely with the United States. And it would be a good opportunity to see them and two countries I've never been to," Rubio said .

Asked if he plans to travel to Russia this week, Rubio said no.

  • In October 2025, the EU introduced a package of sanctions that bans Russian LNG imports until 2027. Slovakia and Hungary continue to receive Russian gas via the Balkan Stream pipeline, bypassing Ukraine.
  • On November 14, Orban said his government would sue the European Union over the decision to gradually stop importing Russian gas. Fico said that Slovakia is also considering such a possibility.
