Prime minister of the United Kingdom Keir Starmer is not resigning amid the scandal over former UK ambassador to the US Peter Mandelson, who is present in the files of American financier and sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. This was stated by the politician's spokesperson, reports Sky News TV channel,

Asked whether the prime minister would resign on February 9, the official said Starmer was "optimistic and confident."

He also denied that the politician would resign.

"The prime minister is concentrating on the job in hand. He is getting on with the job of delivering change across the country," the spokesman said.

Starmer is also confident that he has the unanimous support of the Cabinet of Ministers, the official confirmed.

The day before, the head of Starmer's office and key adviser Morgan McSweeney resigned, and on Monday, Tim Allan, the government's communications director, resigned.

The officials' resignations followed the disclosure of new information about former British Ambassador to the United States Mandelson in the Epstein files, published by the US Department of Justice in late January. They revealed that the former diplomat had been in contact with the financier for longer than he had initially admitted.

In a statement, McSweeney called the decision to appoint Mandelson was "wrong" and took "full responsibility" because he personally advised Starmer to do so.

Mandelson became ambassador in December 2024 and lost his post in September 2025 after additional details of his relationship with Epstein were made public. After the publication of the new files, in early February 2026, the former diplomat left the Labor Party, which is now the ruling party in Britain, and resigned his seat in the House of Lords.

  • "The Epstein Files" indicate that in 2019, shortly before his death, the financier may have been collecting information about president Zelenskyy and his office in the interests of Russian dictator Putin's Valdai Club.
