Trump promised Merz to "strongly" support Germany in promoting peace in Ukraine
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz had a phone conversation with US President Donald Trump two days after taking office. One of the key topics of discussion was Russian aggression in Ukraine, Spiegel reports .
During the conversation, the leaders of the two countries agreed that "the killings in Ukraine must stop quickly."
According to the publication, Merz told Trump that he shares the US demand that Russia agree to a full ceasefire. This should "create space for negotiations."
In turn, the President of the United States pledged to "strongly" support Germany's efforts to achieve a lasting peace together with France, Great Britain, Poland and other European partners.
Also during the conversation, both sides agreed on further close exchange of views and mutual visits to the USA and Germany.
