"We have entered a new phase of war". Macron explains why he wants to resume dialogue with Putin
President of France Emmanuel Macron wants to resume a dialog with the Russian dictator Vladimir Putinas Russia's war against Ukraine has entered a new phase. He expressed this opinion in an interview with European media, in particular Süddeutsche Zeitung.
"For several months now, we have entered a new phase of this war. What was the impetus for this phase? Two things: first, we have reached a point where this war of attrition has entered its final stage; that is, losses and exhaustion on both sides make it quite reasonable to ask how to end this war. And secondly, the Americans have expressed a desire to end it," the French president said.
He asked a rhetorical question whether Europe wants to delegate these discussions to others. Macron added that "our geographical position will not change, whether we like Russia or not; Russia will be here tomorrow."
"Therefore, it is important to structure the resumption of European discussions with Russia without being naive, without putting pressure on Ukrainians, but also without depending on third parties in these discussions," the politician said.
He emphasized that this is why he proposed to European leaders to resume the dialog. But some of them believe that it is too early to "send our diplomatic advisors, as we did."
Macron clarified that channels of discussion have now been restored at the technical level. He expressed hope that this would then be passed on to European partners and Europe would have a well-organized approach. There shouldn't be too many interlocutors, a mandate and simple representation is needed, the French president said.
"The day we have peace, this peace will extend to Europe. Once again, would you prefer that American ambassadors and representatives negotiate the date of Ukraine's accession to the European Union on your behalf, on behalf of Europe? No, I'm sorry. This is a matter of self-respect. Self-respect is good; we need it. So we shouldn't be afraid to be ourselves," he concluded.
- On December 19, 2025, Macron said that Europeans will have to find a way to resume a dialog with Russia directly. He believes that it is useful to talk to Putin again.
- On December 21, Zelenskyy confirmed that Macron had discussed direct dialogue with Russia if America failed to stop the occupiers. But the president believes that we need to fight for the participation of the United States in the peaceful dialog.
- On February 4, 2026, it was reported that a French diplomat was flying to Russia for talks with Russian officials.
