Zelenskyy says electricity shortages during peak hours after Russian energy attacks
The power deficit in the Ukrainian energy system after the Russian attacks amounts to several gigawatts of electricity during peak consumption hours. This was announced by president Volodymyr Zelenskyy in an interview with Bloomberg.
According to him, the recent Russian shelling of the energy sector has put up to 10 GW of capacity out of commission.
This has led to a daily deficit of 5-6 GW of electricity during peak hours, Zelenskyy said.
Some energy facilities will not be repaired until the next heating season, Bloomberg reports.
For comparison, the total capacity of the South Ukrainian Nuclear Power Plant, which has three power units, is 3 GW.
Earlier, in mid-January, Zelenskyy reported that on the 15th, the deficit amounted to 7 GW.
At the same time, the mayor of Kyiv Vitali Klitschko told Reuters that the capital needs a total of 1.7 GW of electricity. He pointed out that at that time the city had about half of the required amount.
- On February 9, Ukrenergo reported that at that time, some of the power units of Ukrainian NPPs were operating for the third day in a row at reduced power after the Russian shelling on the 7th. On that day, the occupiers' targets included infrastructure, which depends on the operation of NPPs, –substations and power lines.
- On February 10, a regional emergency was declared in Kharkiv region in the energy sector.
