Trump supports pro-Russian Orban in Hungary's election

President of the United States Donald Trump supported the candidacy of his ally, the pro-Russian prime minister of Hungary, Viktor Orbán, in the upcoming parliamentary elections in the country. This was stated by the American leader wrote in his social network Truth Social.

"I proudly endorsed Viktor for re-election in 2022 and am honored to do so again. Viktor Orban is a true friend, fighter and WINNER and has my full and unconditional support for re-election as Prime Minister of Hungary – HE WILL NEVER FAIL THE GREAT PEOPLE OF HUNGARY!" Trump said in a complimentary post about Orbán.

Parliamentary elections in Hungary are due to take place in almost two months – on April 12, 2026. The pro-Russian government led by Orbán, in particular, consistently blocks Ukraine's accession to the European Union.

At the end of January, Orban's Fidesz party was supported by 40% of voters, while the main opposition force, Tisza, was supported by 48%, according to a poll by the Hungarian company Publicus Institute, published in the Nepszava newspaper.

Another survey conducted by the independent 21 Institute Center from January 28 to February 2 and published by the news website 24.hu showed 35% of voter support for the opposition party (1% more than in December) and 28% for the ruling party (2% more), Reuters reported.

  • On January 27, Hungary summoned the Ukrainian ambassador to its Foreign Ministry, accusing Kyiv of allegedly interfering in the election in favor of the Tisza party. Ukraine's responded in kind.
