"Murderer!" US accuses Cuba of harassing American diplomat – video
The US State Department has accused Cuba of interfering with the work of its chief diplomat in Havana, Michael Hammer. This is stated in the publications Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs in the social network X and writes Reuters.
Hammer, who arrived in Cuba in late 2024, held a series of meetings with political dissidents and representatives of the Catholic Church.
On Saturday, he published video in which he reported harassment.
"As I was leaving the parish, several communists, no doubt disappointed with how badly the revolution was going, shouted obscenities at me," Hammer says.
Several more videos later appeared, showing small groups of people in two locations shouting the words "Murderer!" and "Imperialist!" at Hammer during nighttime power outages. The Cuban government did not comment on the incident, but the State Department responded.
"The illegitimate Cuban regime must immediately cease its repressive actions aimed at sending individuals to interfere with the diplomatic work of the U.S. Embassy in Cuba. Our diplomats will continue to meet with the Cuban people, despite the regime's failed intimidation tactics," the State Department emphasized.
The Cuban government accuses Hammer of trying to incite unrest, Reuters reports. Last year, the Cuban Foreign Ministry complained to Hammer about his behavior, which it called "interventionist" and accused him of inciting Cubans "to commit crimes and attacks on the state."
The US Embassy denies these allegations and insists that Hammer is "just doing his job."
