The North Korean military continues to participate in Russia's war against Ukraine on Moscow's side, reports The Main Intelligence Directorate (HUR).

According to him, as of January 2026, a grouping of DPRK troops is located in the Kursk region and is attacking Ukrainian border communities from its territory.

While under Russian command, North Korean soldiers fire cannon artillery and multiple launch rocket systems, conduct air and artillery reconnaissance, and adjust MLRS strikes, the ministry said.

The HUR notes that a characteristic feature and one of the key goals of the DPRK army's participation in the war is a focus on mastering drone technology and gaining experience in modern warfare.

"As part of the agreements between Moscow and Pyongyang, the military personnel stationed in the Kursk region are regularly rotated. Since the beginning of the North Korean contingent's participation in the war against Ukraine, about 3,000 trained and experienced soldiers have already returned to the DPRK," the intelligence emphasizes.

She adds that most of these soldiers become instructors to pass on the skills of 21st century warfare to the entire North Korean army.

  • The HUR reported on the deployment of the first DPRK soldiers to the combat zone in Kursk region at the end of October 2024.
  • In addition to the military, North Korea is helping Russia with weapons.
