Sikorsky: Arms race may accelerate the fall of Putin's regime, as it happened with the USSR
A new arms race could hasten the fall of dictator Vladimir Putin's regime, as it did with the Soviet Union. This was stated by Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski in an interview with PAP, DPA and AFP, , according to Barrons.
"Putin must realize that he is following the path of Brezhnev. He himself once said that the Soviet Union collapsed because of excessive spending on armaments, and now he is doing exactly the same thing," he said .
Sikorsky noted that the Russian dictator is waging a "very expensive war" and has provoked the West to increase defense spending. Therefore, European countries agree to invest more in defense because "Putin threatens them.".
Against this backdrop, the Russian dictator will have to squeeze even more defense funds out of the "Texas-sized economy," Sikorsky believes.
"Hopefully, with a similar outcome for the regime (as in the Soviet Union), but faster," the diplomat concluded .
- on May 23, Sikorski expressed the opinion that the European Union is able to deter Russia without US assistance if the latter reduces its support for Europe.
- On June 9, Polish Foreign Minister said he believes that Karol Navrotsky's victory in the country's presidential election will not disrupt the fight against Russia and will not have a negative impact on assistance to Ukraine.
