The United States is an important ally for the European Union, and Finland in particular. But the United States is "changing," and the foreign policy of the U.S. administration Donald Trump is based on an ideology that "contradicts the values" of the EU. This was stated by the President of Finland Alexander Stubb said during his speech in the parliament.

The President emphasized that, in particular, "the country's attitude toward its allies and the way it participates in foreign policy is changing."

"The foreign policy of the current US administration is based on an ideology that contradicts our own values, for example, those that undermine the modern international order. Increasingly, this involves acting outside of international institutions. In the list of US foreign policy priorities, Europe ranks after the Western Hemisphere and the Asia-Pacific region," Stubb said.

He added that there are areas where cooperation continues, such as defense, NATO, and the maritime industry. At the same time, there are others on which the EU "openly disagrees." These include climate change or attitudes toward international institutions and rules, the president noted.

Stubb emphasized that Europe is striving to become "a more equal and capable partner for the United States in the future."

Reuters Agency notesthat Stubb "sought to maintain a close relationship with Trump" in order to secure his support for Ukraine during Russia's invasion and to strengthen Finland's own security as a neighbor of Russia.
