The EU wants to reduce dependence on US gas amid Trump's statements on Greenland

The European Union plans to reduce energy dependence on the United States after the President's statements Donald Trump regarding possible control over Greenland. About this reported politico magazine, citing European Commissioner for Energy Dan Jorgensen.
According to him, the US president's statements have become a "wake-up call" for the EU and forced Brussels to actively seek alternative sources of gas supplies. Jorgensen noted that due to Russia's war against Ukraine and tense relations with the United States, the EU can no longer consider energy ties stable.
The European Commissioner said that the European Commission is already working to expand cooperation with other gas suppliers. In particular, these are Canada, Qatar, Algeria and North African countries.
Currently, the US supplies over 25% of gas to the EU, while five years ago this figure was about 5%. It was expected that dependence on American gas would continue to grow due to the complete rejection of Russian supplies.
At the same time, Jorgensen emphasized that the EU does not seek to reduce trade with the United States or enter into a trade conflict. However, Brussels fears that after giving up Russian gas, the EU may become too dependent on one supplier.
The European Commission is also working to find alternatives to Russian nuclear fuel for EU member states that still use it.
Jorgensen added that American gas is still necessary for the European Union, and a clear line has not yet been established that would define excessive dependence on the United States.
- on January 26, it became known that the Council of the European Union finally approved a phased a ban on Russian gas imports.
