WP: Iran was preparing assassination attempts on Trump and Mike Pompeo
Iran planned to assassinate former US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo in 2022 and presidential candidate Donald Trump in 2024. This is reported by The Washington Post, citing the book "2024: How Trump Took Back the White House and the Democrats Lost America", which is scheduled for release in July 2025.
The book says that Iran was practically able to organize Pompeo's assassination by finding out when and in which hotel in Paris he would stay. No other details are given, but it is noted that he "miraculously escaped".
In addition, in September 2024, during the campaign before the US presidential election, intelligence officials informed Trump that a "longtime enemy of the United States" had recruited assassins who were operating in America at the time.
It is noted that the book is based on interviews with hundreds of people, including senior campaign, White House and law enforcement officials, as well as daily notes, emails, calendar entries and audio recordings from the time.
According to the book, the possible threats from Iran instilled "fear and anxiety" in Trump and his aides. And this influenced their thinking on a daily basis and led to major changes in the then-presidential candidate's schedule and movements.
Security officials effectively turned Mar-a-Lago, Trump's home and private club in Palm Beach, Florida, into an armed camp. They convinced Trump to fly on a duplicate plane owned by Steve Witkoff.
On other days, when Trump flew his own plane, Secret Service agents flew decoy planes and followed him down the runway during takeoff for extra security. Agents feared snipers and missiles.
It is noted that Iranian assassins have tried to kill American officials at least three times in the three years preceding Trump's election. The US authorities have been investigating whether any of the assassination attempts on the current US president had ties to Iran, but have so far found nothing.
At the same time, the threats described in the book were not limited to this country alone.
- There have been several assassination attempts on Trump over the past year, but they have not been officially linked to Iran. The first occurred on July 13, 2024 during a campaign rally in Butler. A bullet hit Trump's right ear, leaving traces of blood on the politician's face. The alleged shooter was killed, identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, who shot at the politician from the roof of a neighboring building.
- Another alleged assassination attempt on Trump occurred on September 15. His campaign said that a shooting took place at a golf club near him . The alleged shooter was quickly detained. According to CNN,, he supported Ukraine. Trump himself said that the attempt was allegedly because of the rhetoric of Biden and Harris.
- In October, a man with a gun was detained near the venue of Trump's election rally in California . This case could be an attempt to prepare for a third assassination attempt on the current US president.
