Latvia has announced the completion of a nearly 300-kilometer fence along the border with Russia. About reported LSM media.

The construction of the 280 km long fence lasted several years. The budget amounted to 166 million euros. Another €20 million will be invested in the construction of infrastructure for patrolling and technology next year.

The Latvian-Russian border fence is an important part of the external security infrastructure of Latvia and the entire European Union. Six construction contractors were involved in the project.

Currently, border guards and the Latvian Ministry of Internal Affairs are conducting joint inspections of the completed fence to identify deficiencies.

The State Border Guard Service noted that the situation on the Latvian-Russian border is stable, but there are violations.

This year, for example, the Opole Border Guard detained two violators from Russia and recorded three cases of attempted illegal border crossing from the Latvian side to Russia. Also, 19 administrative cases were opened for staying at the border without passes. Nevertheless, border guards conclude that the fence has significantly improved their work.
