Storm Christine left 800,000 homes without power in Portugal and hit Spain – photos
Portugal and Spain have been hit by the Christine storm, leaving hundreds of thousands of people without power and disrupting highway and rail traffic. This was reported by the agency Reuters.
On Wednesday morning, the storm left more than 800,000 homes in central and northern Portugal without power, knocked down trees and power poles, damaged homes, and disrupted highway and rail traffic before moving inland to Spain.
According to emergency services, at least one person was killed when a tree fell on his car on the outskirts of Lisbon.
Civil protection authorities reported approximately 1500 incidents related to weather conditions caused by wind gusts, heavy rains and even snowfall in various parts of Portugal.
Grid operator E-Redes said technical teams are working to restore power to about 855,000 customers after their initial efforts were hampered by bad weather.
The storm then moved eastward toward Spain, which is still recovering from the effects of the previous storm, Joseph. On Tuesday, in the coastal city of Torremolinos, strong winds toppled a palm tree, killing a woman.
The Spanish National Meteorological Agency Office has warned that large areas of the country will face strong winds, with gusts reaching hurricane force in some places.
As a result, the authorities in some areas of the southern province of Almeria declared a red alert. Local authorities closed parks, and in some areas, sports and outdoor educational activities were suspended.
