Klimkin on the US-Russia nuclear deal: It is impossible to reach an agreement in weeks

The United States and Russia will not be able to quickly agree on a new treaty to limit nuclear arsenals, as the potential agreement contains many strategic issues, says former foreign minister Pavlo Klimkin. He expressed this opinion in a commentary LIGA.net for YouTube project "Klimkin explains.
"It is impossible to reach an agreement in weeks, because it contains many strategic issues, but also many technical details. And this is the case when the devil is in the details," Klimkin said.
The diplomat is convinced that this means, first of all, trust in each other, understanding what is restricted and how, understanding what is controlled (the inspection system).
Klimkin recalled that START III included an information exchange of approximately 2,000 messages a year on what potential the parties had. He suggested that Moscow and Washington could make a political declaration on a temporary extension of the old agreement.
"This story can be quite fast. Should we extend the old agreement? In my opinion, no, because the conditions have fundamentally changed," the former Foreign Minister said.
START III (New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty) is an agreement between the United States and Russia signed in 2010. It provided for the limitation of the number of deployed nuclear warheads to 1,550 and strategic carriers to 700 on each side.
The Treaty also introduced mechanisms for mutual inspections and data exchange to monitor compliance with obligations. START III entered into force in 2011 and was extended in 2021 for another five years, until February 5, 2026. In 2023, Russia suspended the treaty, but it was believed that both sides were still in compliance with its terms.
- In the fall of 2025, the Russian dictator said that Moscow was ready to extend the main quantitative restrictions under the START III treaty for a year after February 5, 2026. US President this idea was approved by.
- On February 4, the Pope said that The United States and Russia should renew the START III nuclear arms control treaty.
- On February 5, Axios wrote that the United States and Russia close to a deal on the extension of the nuclear treaty.
