Vitaly Portnikov's opinion: Why Vladimir Putin needs Alexander Lukashenko's army - russian version.
The hours-long negotiations between Vladimir Putin and Alexander Lukashenko took place on 11 March without concluding press statements. However, it is clear to observers what the Russian and Belarusian rulers are talking about and why they meet so often. Putin needs Lukashenko to become a party to the war against Ukraine. And he has literally done so. Lukashenko is already providing the territory of Belarus for the Russian aggression against Ukraine. However, it is important for the Russian president that it is the Belarusian army that is involved in the invasion.
For what the Russian president wants that? And why did he need to hold a "live" meeting of the Russian Security Council where the decision to recognise the independence of the so-called "people's republics" of Donbas was taken? To share responsibility with his comrades-in-arms, to demonstrate that he had the full support of Russia's entire top leadership. So that there would be no one to say that he had no part in making this criminal decision that allowed Putin to attack Ukraine.
