First Deputy Chief of the GRU shot dead in Moscow: he is in hospital
An attempt has been made in Moscow to assassinate Lieutenant General of the Russian Defense Ministry, First Deputy Chief of the Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU) Vladimir Alekseev. This was reported by the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation.
According to Russian investigators, on February 6, an unknown person fired several shots at Alekseev in a residential building on Volokolamskoye Highway in northwestern Moscow and fled the scene.

CCTV footage is being studied at the scene, and eyewitnesses are being questioned.
Alekseev has been the deputy chief of the GRU since 2011. During Russia's intervention in Syria, he commanded military intelligence operations, and in 2017 was awarded the title of "hero" RF.
He is believed to have been involved in interference in the 2016 US presidential election and is on the US government's sanctions list.
In 2023, Alekseev called Yevgeny Prigozhin's "rebellion" a "stab in the back of the country and the president," adding that the leader of Wagner's group was "trying to encroach on his power." He stated that this "could only be invented by enemies of the Russian Federation.".
