President of the United States Donald Trump was "not surprised" by Russia's massive attack on Ukraine on the night of February 3, even after an agreement not to hit the energy sector during the cold weather. This was reported by White House spokeswoman Caroline Leavitt, according to CNN.

Speaking to reporters, Leavitt said that the planned talks between Russia and Ukraine will take place this week in Abu Dhabi. The United States will act as a mediator.

"I spoke to the president about this this morning, and his reaction, unfortunately, did not reflect surprise," she said when asked about the nighttime shelling of Ukraine.

"These are two countries that have been fighting a very brutal war for several years now, a war that would never have started if the president was still in power," Leavitt continued.

Earlier that day, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that he expects to the US reaction after the nighttime shelling. He recalled that it was a proposal by the United States to stop striking the energy sector for the duration of diplomacy and cold winter weather.

  • On January 29, 2026, Trump announced that he personally asked Putin not to shell the Ukrainian energy sector for a week due to the increasing frost.
  • Zelenskyy thanked the US president and emphasized that Ukraine calculates to fulfill these agreements.
  • On the evening of February 2, Trump once again boasted that Putin allegedly agreed to his request to stop attacking Ukraine's energy sector.
