The Security Service of Ukraine, for the first time in the history of the state, has exposed a Hungarian military intelligence agent network that was spying in Transcarpathia to the detriment of Ukraine's national security. The SBU reports this.

The network was engaged in collecting intelligence on the military security of the region, the locations of the Defense Forces, air and ground defense facilities, as well as the mood of the local population. In particular, the agents were interested in how the military and civilians would react if a foreign, particularly Hungarian, military contingent entered the region.

As a result of a counterintelligence special operation, the SBU detained two individuals involved in espionage activities for Hungary. Their supervisor was a career officer of the country's military intelligence, whom the SBU had already identified.

One of the detainees is a 40-year-old resident of the Beregov district, a former military serviceman, recruited back in 2021. In September 2024, the curator activated the agent and gave him a number of tasks:

  • to study the reaction of the population and the military to the possible introduction of "peacekeeping" forces from Hungary;

  • to find out about the availability of military equipment and weapons on the black market;

  • collect data on military forces, law enforcement agencies, and the migration of the Hungarian population in the region.

Later, the agent independently conducted reconnaissance on the location of Ukrainian S-300 air defense systems. After that, he left for Hungary, issued a certificate of care for his sick father, and passed the collected information to the curator. During the meeting, he received cash for further activities, as well as instructions on creating a network of informants – he tried to recruit at least two people.

In March 2025, another recorded meeting with the curator took place, during which the agent received a special phone for encrypted communication. New tasks included identifying official vehicles of the Defense Forces, data on the losses of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and events on the front. The agent already had contacts in the ranks of the Ukrainian military.

Another detainee is a former servicewoman who resigned in 2025. According to the SBU, she provided Hungarian intelligence with data on the presence of aviation in the region and the defense systems of her former unit.

The SBU counterintelligence documented every stage of the agents' activities. During the searches, phones and other evidence of espionage were seized.

Both defendants have been charged with treason under martial law. They are currently in custody and face life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
