Dozens of people are dead and missing after sudden heavy rain caused flooding and landslides in Indian Kashmir. This was reported by Reuters with reference to local authorities.

At least 60 dead and more than 100 missing are reported.

On Thursday, the village of Chasothi in Indian Kashmir was inundated by rapid landslides and floodwaters, washing away pilgrims who had gathered for lunch before climbing a hill to a popular pilgrimage site.

"We heard a deafening roar, followed by a sudden flood and slush. People were screaming and some of them fell into the Chenab River. Others were buried under the debris," said Rakesh Sharma, an injured pilgrim.

On Friday, bags, clothes, and other belongings were caked with mud among broken electric poles and mud. Rescuers were using shovels, ropes and makeshift bridges to try to pull people out of the rubble.

"We were told that another 100-150 people may be buried under the rubble," one of the rescuers told ANI news agency.

  • In early July, the disaster hit the United States. Floods in Texas began on July 4 after a heavy downpour. Due to precipitation that exceeded previous forecasts, the water level in the Guadalupe River rose sharply to more than eight meters.
  • On July 13, it was reported about 129 dead and 166 missing.
