The United States will soon announce tougher sanctions against Russia in connection with its war against Ukraine. This was reported by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, according to CNN.

"We will announce a significant increase in sanctions on Russia either after the close of trading this afternoon [October 22] or tomorrow morning [October 23]," Bessent told reporters at the White House on Wednesday.

"You will have to wait and see what happens," the minister added.

A White House official told CNN that U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to announce a significant increase in sanctions against Russia. According to preliminary data, they will not be directed against China.

  • Bloomberg wrote that EU leaders will approve a 19th package of sanctions against Russia at a summit on October 23 after Slovakia withdrew its objections.
  • Ukraine and the EU started talking about a 20th package of sanctions against Russia, said Vlasyuk, the president's envoy for sanctions policy.
