Zelenskyy expects to buy at least 100 Gripen aircraft from Sweden: letter of intent signed

On Wednesday, October 22, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Prime Minister of Sweden Ulf Kristersson signed a letter of intent on cooperation in the development of air capabilities, which, in particular, provides for the purchase of Gripen aircraft by Ukraine. This became known from broadcast, which was conducted by the Office of the President.
Kristersson said that the document will open up opportunities for an export agreement to supply Ukraine with the latest Gripen fighters.
The letter of intent is not aimed at new deliveries. However, it is a long-term cooperation to supply the Air Force of Ukraine with 100-150 E-series aircraft, which are just beginning to be produced.
"This agreement is a clear, mutual statement of intent. And this is the beginning of a long journey for the next 10-15 years. And we have long-term ambitions," emphasized Kristersson.

Zelenskyy expects that the future contract will allow Ukraine to receive at least 100 such aircraft. He emphasized that these are strong aviation platforms that allow for a wide range of tasks.
"We clearly understand that this is a process. We clearly understand the financial basis for being able to fulfill this important contract," said the president.
When asked about the likely timeline, Kristersson said that deliveries would begin in about three years.
The Saab JAS 39 Gripen is a Swedish-made light multi-role fighter aircraft designed by Saab for intercepting, striking ground targets and reconnaissance. The first flight took place in 1988, and the aircraft entered service with the Swedish Air Force in 1997. The Gripen is known for its maneuverability, efficiency and ability to operate from short runways. The current Gripen E modification is equipped with a more powerful engine, active phased array radar, and advanced communications and electronic warfare systems. These aircraft are in service with several countries, including Sweden, the Czech Republic, Hungary, South Africa and Brazil .
- In July 2024, the Swedish Foreign Minister said that there was a willingness to give Ukraine Gripen fighter jets, but Kyiv refused them, as it decided that having two fighter systems – both F-16 and Gripen – at the same time was too much.
- On September 4, 2025, the Swedish Defense Minister said that the country was open to selling Ukraine modern Gripen fighter jets, but after the war ended.
