A British destroyer and a helicopter escorted a Russian warship across the English Channel

A Royal Navy destroyer and a helicopter were involved in a 48-hour NATO operation to monitor a Russian warship in UK waters, a first for the Alliance. About said the press service of the British Navy.

The Portsmouth-based HMS Duncan was ordered by NATO's Allied Command to escort the Russian destroyer Vice Admiral Kulakov across the English Channel.

This is the first time a Royal Navy ship has been deployed under direct Alliance command to such an operation, as part of a wider security effort in Northern Europe.

The Type 45 destroyer used its advanced sensors and systems to intercept the Russian ship in the North Sea, tracking its movement westward across the English Channel to the island of Ouessant off the coast of France.

The mission also involved a Wildcat helicopter from the 815th Naval Aviation Squadron, a helicopter from the Netherlands and the French Navy.
