American actor George Clooney, who supported the Democratic Party and clashed with the US president Donald Trump has been granted French citizenship. This was reported by the newspaper Politico referring to the relevant document.

According to the report, Clooney was granted French citizenship at the request of the country's Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot.

In a letter dated October 20, sent to French Interior Minister Laurent Nunes, who is in charge of citizenship procedures, Barrot proposed to grant the Hollywood star, his wife Amal and their children citizenship under a simplified procedure.

This procedure allows "a French-speaking foreigner who, through his or her outstanding work, contributes to the prestige of France and the prosperity of its international economic relations" to obtain citizenship at the request of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Barrault emphasized that the Clooney family "permanently resides" in the south of France, where their children study, and that the couple "maintains personal and professional ties with [France]."

The letter points to the Clooneys' charitable work and emphasizes that "through their life's work and beliefs, they embody the values of solidarity, freedom and creativity that France promotes around the world."

It also states that "Clooney's professional activities bring enormous financial benefits, which benefit the French film industry."

The French Foreign Ministry spokesperson confirmed that the request for citizenship for the Clooney family, which was officially approved on December 26, was made by Barrot.

The actor and his wife Amal, a human rights lawyer, run the Clooney Justice Foundation, an organization that provides free legal aid for women's rights violations in more than 40 countries.

In Europe, the foundation's activities and the actor's activism led to his conflict with the Russian authorities and the Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orbanwhom Clooney called an example of "anger and hatred."

In the United States, Clooney maintained close ties with representatives of the Democratic Party and played an important role in convincing the 46th President of the United States Joe Biden not to run in the 2024 presidential election. He has also clashed with Trump, who in April called him a "fake movie actor" on his social media platform Truth Social.

The conflict between Clooney and Trump is public and has been going on for several years. The actor has repeatedly criticized the American president for his style of politics, rhetoric, and attitude toward democracy, migration, and press freedom.

In response, Trump publicly devalued Clooney, calling him a "second-rate actor" and accusing him of political bias. The conflict escalated during the US presidential campaigns, when Clooney openly supported the Democrats.
