Zelenskyy on the energy truce: Thanks to Trump, the real situation will show whether it works
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy thanked his American colleague Donald Trump after he said he had reached an agreement with the dictator Vladimir Putin on the temporary suspension of strikes on Ukrainian cities during the cold weather. However, the Ukrainian leader noted that the real situation will show whether this will be implemented.
"President Trump's announcement to keep Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities safe from Russian attacks during this winter's cold is important. Energy is the foundation of life, and we appreciate the efforts of our partners to help us protect lives. Thank you, President Trump!" wrote the head of Ukraine on the social network X.
He also noted that the negotiating teams discussed this during meetings in the United Arab Emirates on January 23-24.
Ukraine expects that these agreements will be implemented, Zelenskyy said, adding that steps to de-escalate "contribute to a real movement towards ending the war."
Subsequently, in an evening address, the president expressed hope that the United States will be able to ensure that the strikes on the energy sector stop.
"The situation at night and these days, the real situation at our energy facilities and in our cities will show it," the head of state added.
Earlier, Trump said that at his request, Putin agreed to stop shelling Kyiv and other Ukrainian settlements for a week due to increasing frost.
- On the preliminary truce on energy and the Black Sea between Ukraine and Russia agreed in separate talks with the United States at the end of March 2025. However, Moscow has repeatedly violated this truce.
On January 28, Zelenskyy said that the occupiers were preparing for a new strike on Ukraine.
- The next day, the mayor of Lviv announced that the city had launched an emergency preparedness regime due to deteriorating weather conditions and alleged Russian shelling.
