Zelenskyy on Ukraine's membership in the EU in 2027: I do not believe that Russia will not stop our accession
Ukraine needs the peace plan to include a specific date for accession to the European Union, because Moscow may oppose Kyiv's European integration. This was stated by president Volodymyr Zelenskyy at a meeting with journalists on February 6, a correspondent of LIGA.net said.
"I have already said that we will be technically ready [to join the EU] by 2027. That's why I told European leaders that we are ready. And they need to understand us. You are talking about the end of the war and simultaneous security guarantees. And the EU is a security guarantee for us," Zelenskyy said.
According to him, the American side says that Russia will not oppose Ukraine's European integration – this is enshrined in the 20-point peace plan.
"And I, as the president of Ukraine, say that I do not believe that Russia will not stop our movement to the EU. Because there is a practice of doing this not with its own hands, but through other actors, and we all understand what these actors are," the head of state said.
That is why Ukraine wants a specific date of accession to the European Union – because it will be signed by Ukraine, Europe, the United States and Russia, which are parties to the peace plan, the president explained.
For example, the United States will take responsibility for working with some EU countries politically so that they do not block Ukraine's accession – and whoever signs the EU peace plan will also have to do so, Zelenskyy added.
Meanwhile, on January 29, German chancellor Friedrich Merz said that Ukraine's accelerated accession to the EU impossible.
- Kyiv's European integration consistently blocking the current pro-Russian government in Hungary, headed by prime minister Orbán, who is also an ally of US president Trump.
- In August 2025, Bloomberg's interlocutors claimed that the American leader called Orbán after talks with Zelenskyy and European leaders to discuss why he blocks negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU.
- On February 5, 2026, Trump supported the Hungarian prime minister at the upcoming elections in the country.
