Shooting after a soccer match in Mexico: 11 people killed

On Sunday, January 25, armed men opened fire on a football field in the Mexican city of Salamanca, Guanajuato. At least 11 people were killed and 12 others were injured. This was reported by Associated Press.

The attack took place around 17:20 (01:20 Kyiv time). Witnesses say that the armed men arrived in two cars, got out and fired indiscriminately at the players and spectators.

As a result of the shooting, 10 people died on the spot, and another person died later in the hospital. Among the wounded were a woman and a minor child.

Mayor César Prieto said that the motive for the attack is still unknown. He called it "part of a wave of crime" in the city and called on President Claudia Scheinbaum to help curb the violence.

The state prosecutor's office said it was investigating the incident. The attackers are wanted.

Last year, the state of Guanajuato became the leader in Mexico in terms of the total number of murders. Most of the violence on its territory is related to organized crime. Among the criminal groups operating in the state are the Jalisco New Generation cartel and the Santa Rosa de Lima cartel. These two organizations are engaged in a long war for territory in Guanajuato.

The Mexican government says that the country's homicide rate in 2025 was the lowest since 2016, amounting to 17.5 murders per 100,000 inhabitants.

"However, analysts warn that these figures may not fully reflect the real level of violence in the country," the agency writes.
