Lighting in parks and squares to be turned off in Kyiv to save electricity

Kyiv will gradually limit and turn off outdoor lighting in parks and squares to ensure rational use of electricity. About this reported at the Kyiv City State Administration.
The authorities noted that the lighting of parks and squares in the capital is mainly provided by sodium and mercury lamps, and they do not have the technical ability to regulate the level of lighting. As a result, their further operation is impractical in conditions of limited energy supply. Therefore, the lighting of parks and squares is subject to complete shutdown.
The experts explained that from the moment the outdoor lighting is switched on in the evening until the curfew starts, and after it ends in a certain period of time in the morning, LED lamps are in operation. They can adjust the brightness and operate in an energy-saving mode – at up to 20% of power. Other types of luminaires that are not dimmable are switched on partially – up to 30%, depending on the number of them at the facility.
The KCSA also said that the capital's outdoor lighting control system has about 1500 control cabinets. Street lighting facilities, parks, squares and adjacent territories are simultaneously connected to them. Lighting in parks and squares is mostly turned off manually.
"Lighting in parks and squares will be turned off in stages. During the curfew, outdoor lighting in the city will be turned off completely," the KCSA said.
- Kyiv has already reduced the power of all street lighting up to 20% due to electricity shortages. It was also decided to limit architectural and decorative lighting of houses, buildings and structures, advertising and information signs.
- on January 16, Ukrzaliznytsia reported that dim the lighting at five major railway stations, including those in the capital.
