The United Kingdom intends to purchase 12 F-35A fighter jets capable of carrying tactical nuclear weapons. This was announced by Prime Minister of the country Keir Starmer.

"In an era of radical uncertainty, we can no longer take the world for granted. My government is investing in our national security by purchasing 12 new F-35A fighter jets," said he said on social media.

The Prime Minister did not say how much money will be allocated.

According to Sky news, the purchase of fighter jets from Lockheed Martin will allow the British Air Force to carry nuclear weapons for the first time since the end of the Cold War.

On June 25, Starmer is expected to announce at the NATO summit in The Hague that the new squadron will join the alliance's mission and may be armed with American nuclear weapons.

The prime minister noted that Britain's commitment to NATO is unquestionable, as is the alliance's contribution to the country's security. However, everyone needs to step up efforts to protect the Euro-Atlantic region for future generations.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte welcomed the announcement.

"The UK has for many decades stated its commitment to deterring NATO and I strongly welcome today's announcement that the UK will now also join NATO's nuclear mission and purchase F-35As. This is another significant contribution to NATO," he said .
