President of the United States Donald Trump has threatened the neighboring country of Canada with heavy tariffs if it gets closer to China. This was stated by the American leader in his social network Truth Social.

"If the governor (Prime Minister of Canada – Ed.) Carney thinks he is going to make Canada a "Drop Off Port" for China to send goods and products into the United States, he is sorely mistaken. China will eat Canada alive, completely devour it, including the destruction of their businesses, social fabric, and general way of life," the US president wrote.

This is not the first time he has called Carney "governor". Earlier, Trump also said that Canada allegedly should become a "51st state".

Now, he has said that if Canada enters into an agreement with China, Washington will "immediately" impose 100% duties on all its goods and products entering the United States.

This is how the US president reacted to a publication by Just the News accusing Carney of allegedly having a plan for rapprochement with China.

Earlier, on January 16, the PM of Canada met in Beijing with the leader of the People's Republic of China Xi Jinping. In particular, they achieved a preliminary agreement in principle to remove trade barriers and reduce duties between the two countries.

  • On January 20, the Canadian PM, in his speech at the Davos forum, called on leaders to unite to resist Trump's "America First" doctrine and his efforts to destroy the post-World War II international order. Subsequently, U.S. president withdrew the invitation for Carney to his Board of Peace.
