Former head of the State Border Guard Service suspected of corruption Serhiy Deineko did not resign from military service, said in a commentary for LIGA.net Andriy Demchenko, the department's spokesman.

"As of now, the information about Serhiy Deineko's discharge from military service is not true. Military service and dismissal from it are defined by the Law of Ukraine on Military Duty and Military Service and the relevant Regulation on the Military Service of Ukrainian Citizens in the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine," the official said.

Earlier, Transcarpathian journalist Vitaliy Glagola, citing his own sources said that Deineko was allegedly dismissed from service by a decision of the military medical commission.

The journalist claimed that the reason for this was the health condition of the former head of the SBGS, and that on January 27, he also submitted his resignation.

There is no official confirmation of this.

UPDATED. Head of the Communication Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Mariana Reva said LIGA.net that Deineko remains a pro bono advisor to the head of the department, Ihor Klymenko.

Reva noted that this is not a full-time position and that it is not paid.

  • On January 4, president Zelenskyy dismissed Deineko from the post of head of the SBGS, and he was appointed advisor to the Minister of Internal Affairs.
  • On January 22, the NABU served notice of suspicion to Deineko, the head of a department at one of the checkpoints Marushchak, and a former SBGS official of taking bribes for facilitating the smuggling of cigarettes into the EU.
  • In mid-January, interior minister Klymenko said that the acting head of the SBGS Vavrynyuk is the only candidate to head the agency on a permanent basis.
