Supplying Ukraine with ‘virtually all the necessary means’ to defend itself against Russia is the best security guarantee for Ukraine before it joins NATO, Czech foreign minister said.

In an interview with Voice of America, Jan Lipavsky said that it was necessary to look for ways to provide Ukraine with the ammunition it needs.

"I believe that the best guarantee for Ukraine is to provide it with virtually all the necessary means it needs to defend itself against the Russian imperialist invasion," Mr Lipavsky stressed.

He added that it was also necessary to work on Ukraine's membership in NATO, which must become true.

"I think we should seriously discuss this [Ukraine's membership in NATO]. It won't happen overnight, but one day it will happen, and we should be ready for it," Mr Lipavsky believes.

The Czech foreign minister noted that Ukraine's membership in the Alliance will be discussed at the NATO ministerial meeting in Oslo.

"[B]ut we must be politically prepared to show a sign that we are seriously thinking about it, that Europe needs a new security framework. And NATO should seriously consider Ukraine's membership," the minister said.

NATO’s secretary general, Jens Stoltenberg, has invited Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelenskyy to the Alliance's summit in Vilnius.

Earlier reports suggest that the NATO summit may result in closer relations and support for Ukraine, with some strings attached in the form of required reforms, to accommodate both its members and Ukraine.
