One of the key tasks for the Ukrainian army today is to repel Russian drones, which the enemy is using throughout the country, modernizing them and changing tactics. This was stated by Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrskyi following a monthly meeting on countering the "Shahed".

"The Russian aggressor does not change its intentions to seize our territory and plunge our peaceful towns and villages into blackouts. Therefore, we have a clear task – to continue the fight, to defend the state, to destroy the enemy. Including the means of air attack, which the Russian Federation uses to launch massive attacks on the territory of Ukraine every day and every night," emphasized Syrsky .

He noted that the key task at this stage is to strengthen the UAV interceptor area, increase the number of relevant drones, ground stations and radar systems, and increase the volume and quality of crew training.

"As part of the echeloned system, interception lines are created at a certain distance from large cities. The number of interceptor UAVs used and their effectiveness is gradually increasing. At the same time, he emphasized the need to intensify this work, accelerate the procurement of relevant weapons and equipment, and strengthen the manning of relevant units," Syrskyi said .

Separate divisions of unmanned air defense systems are also being formed. Staff units of UAV interceptors are being created as part of training grounds (training centers). Additional resources of army aviation and small aircraft are being deployed to counter the "Shahed". The support of international partners is also being mobilized for this purpose .

"The enemy is taking advantage of the weather conditions, modernizing its attack drones and changing the tactics of their use, attacking at ultra-low altitudes. Accordingly, we are modernizing our countermeasures and changing the system to achieve the necessary results," added Syrskyi .

  • In September, Zelenskyy said that 1600 interceptors were needed to counter 800 Russian "Shaheds" .
  • On December 26, the president said that Russians are trying to bypass Ukrainian drone interceptors, in particular thanks to Belarus, by placing on residential buildings equipment to target "Shaheds".
