Zelenskyy on losses: Officially, 55,000 soldiers killed at the front, many missing
The head of Ukraine names the number of fallen defenders, reporting on "a large number of people" considered missing by the state

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced a new number of official Ukrainian losses at the front due to the Russian war. The head of state said this in an interview with France 2 TV channel, le Monde newspaper reports.
"Officially, 55,000 military personnel, both professional and mobilized, have been killed on the battlefield in Ukraine," the president said.
Zelenskyy added that there are also "a large number of people whom Ukraine considers missing."
Earlier, the head of state voiced Ukrainian losses in February 2025: at that time, since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion, more than 46,000 defenders were killed, more than 380,000 soldiers were wounded, and more than 10,000 were missing or in Russian captivity.
- According to the General Staff of the AFU data, Russia's estimated losses as of February 4, 2026, amounted to 1,243,070 people killed and wounded.
- In August 2025, U.S. president Trump published figures showing that in the first seven months of that year, Moscow lost about 14 times more troops than Kyiv – 112,500 dead versus about 8,000 (excluding missing persons).
