The Democrat won the election to the Texas Senate. He beat a Republican supported by Trump

Democrat Taylor Remet won a by-election to the Senate in Texas, capturing a traditionally Republican district in which US President Donald Trump won by 17 points in 2024. This was reported by the newspaper Politico.
Roemeth, a union leader and veteran, easily defeated Republican Lee Wambsgans in Fort Worth County. With almost all the votes counted, the Democrat had a commanding lead of more than 14 percentage points.
"This victory goes to ordinary workers," Remet told his supporters.
His victory reinforced the Democrats' reputation for exceeding expectations in this cycle's special elections. Democrats said it was further proof that voters in the second Trump administration are motivated to reject Republican candidates and their policies.
The seat became vacant because Republican Kelly Hancock, who held the seat for four terms, resigned to take a state office. Hancock easily won the election every time he ran, and Republicans have held the seat for decades.
On Saturday, Trump took to social media to urge people to vote for Wambaugh. The American president called her a successful businesswoman and an "incredible supporter" of his Make America Great Again movement.
Remet's victory allows him to hold his post only until early January, and to retain his seat for a full four-year term, he needs to win the general election in November.
The Texas Legislature will resume its work only in 2027, and the Republican Party will still have a comfortable majority.
The Texas State Senate is the upper house of the state legislature, which, together with the House of Representatives, forms a bicameral parliament. It consists of 31 senators who are elected by popular vote from individual districts, usually for a four-year term with no limit on the number of re-elections.
The Senate reviews and adopts laws, participates in budgeting and tax policy, and approves the governor's appointments to key government positions. Its separate function is to conduct trials in impeachment cases initiated by the House of Representatives.
- On November 5, 2025, it was reported that in the United States, representatives of the Democratic Party won the first major elections after Trump's election. In particular, 34-year-old Democrat Mamdani won the mayoral election in New York City.
- In December, it was reported that for the first time in three decades a Democratic candidate won the mayoral election in Miami.
