A European army separate from NATO is unlikely to be able to deter the Russian dictator Vladimir Putin from attack, but can protect against lower-level threats. This opinion was voiced by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Poland Radoslav Sikorsky at a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels, transmits RMF 24.

"It is not a force that can deter Putin, but there are lower-level threats, such as those in North Africa or the Balkans, where we must be able to act together," he said.

According to Sikosrkyi, it is pointless to talk about the so-called "federal army" because this idea is supposedly not realistic – national armies will not unite.

"However, we could create what I call a European legion, that is, for starters, a brigade-sized unit that could be joined by citizens of the member states, and perhaps even the EU candidate states," Sikorsky said.

Such a legion would be financed from the European budget. But despite the "unrealistic" nature of the idea, the deteriorating international security situation in Europe makes it even more relevant than ever before, the Polish Foreign Minister said.

  • According to Politico, Europe may create your own alliance instead of NATO without US participation, but with Ukraine. It could be created on the basis of a "coalition of the willing."
  • President Zelensky stated that the Ukrainian army could to become a fundamental contribution into European troops.
  • According to him, the Armed Forces of Ukraine is the largest and most experienced formation in Europe, as it has real experience in a full-scale war. Therefore, it is could become the basis for for the joint forces of Europe after the end of hostilities.
  • At the same time, NATO Secretary General does not support creation of a separate army in Europe. According to him, this will complicate everything and will appeal to Putin.
