First six Leopard 2A4 tanks that Spain has promised to give Ukraine are to be transferred immediately after Easter, according to a report by the Spanish newspaper El Pais.

While Orthodox Christians celebrate Easter on 16 April, Catholic countries including Spain mark the holiday on April 9.

Earlier, Spanish defence minister Margarita Robles assured that Leopard 2 tanks would be handed over to Ukraine "in the spring".

The vehicles have already been repaired at a factory in Seville, a city in southern Spain, and will take part in firing exercises, El Pais reported.

Spain previously promised to provide Ukraine with ten tanks and relevant training.

Earlier this month, Germany transferred all 18 Leopard 2A6 tanks that it had offered Ukraine.

The so-called tank alliance was launched in January, when Germany gave in to repeated calls to allow re-export of its Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine.
