US to send new units armed with Abrams tanks to Romania

A detachment of American soldiers with Abrams tanks will be sent to Romania. This was announced by Romanian Chief of Defense Staff Georgice Vlad, reports Romania Journal.
According to him, the United States has promised to "improve the quality and combat capability of the forces stationed in Romania." Therefore, troops armed with Abrams tanks will be sent to the country.
"In the near future, a detachment of American soldiers equipped with Abrams tanks will be deployed in Romania," the official said.
This detachment is part of the regular U.S. presence in Romania, deployed on a rotational basis, and is not an increase in troop strength.
In fact, in October 2025, the United States announced a reduction in its military presence in the country. About 1,000 American troops remain in Romania.
Abrams, the main battle tanks of the U.S. Army, are considered to be among the most advanced in the world. Romania is currently in the process of purchasing 54 Abrams tanks.
In addition to American troops, European troops are stationed in Romania. The total number of American and European troops remaining in the country after Washington's decision to reduce its presence is about 3,500 soldiers.
- October 29, 2025 The Romanian Ministry of Defense confirmed reducing the number of US troops in the country.
- On December 1, Bloomberg wrote that in the event of a Russian attack on Romania, NATO troops will be able to reach the Romanian front only in a few weeks, and during this time the country will have to defend itself virtually alone.
