Man injured in shooting near parliament building in Serbia – photos, video

On Wednesday, October 22, a man was seriously injured by gunshots near the parliament building in Belgrade, near a tent set up by supporters of Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic. This was reported by Reuters.

One person was detained and police guarded the scene. Vucic said at a government event that he had to leave early because of a "terrorist attack that had just taken place in front of the Serbian Assembly building".

Large-scale street protests against Vucic have been going on for a year. The reason was the collapse of the canopy of the railway station in Novi Sad last November, which killed 16 people, and many blame it on government negligence and corruption.

The shooting took place in a park between the parliament and Vucic's office, where his supporters had set up tents to prevent protesters from approaching the buildings. No protests were taking place at the time .

One of the videos posted online shows armed security officers approaching one of the tents, while a man limps away from the scene. Several shots were fired, after which a fire broke out inside the tent, according to the video posted on the NOVA website, the location of which was confirmed by Reuters.

It is not yet known who opened fire and what caused the fire, which was soon extinguished. According to Serbian media, a 70-year-old man shot a 57-year-old man in the leg and then sprayed him with pepper spray in a tent camp.

Serbian Health Minister Zlatibor Lončar told reporters that the man was seriously injured and will be operated on immediately.

Another video posted on X and confirmed by Reuters shows a man lying on the ground with his hands behind his back, surrounded by police.

A Reuters reporter saw fire trucks and police surrounding the scene. Local police declined to comment, but one officer at the scene said "there is no longer any danger.".
