Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost of the United States was elected as the successor to Pope Francis On May 8, he took the name of Pope Leo XIV, according to Vatican News .

The new pope appeared in front of the faithful on the balcony of St. Peter's Cathedral and gave them his first blessing: "Peace be with you all!".

"This is the first greeting of the risen Christ, the good shepherd who gave his life for us. I also hope that this message of peace will settle in our hearts and families," he explained the choice of these words.

Thousands of pilgrims and tourists greeted him with applause on the square.

According to CNN, the 69-year-old Prevost has worked as a missionary in South America for most of his career and recently took over the important Vatican office that appoints bishops. He is expected to continue the reforms initiated by Pope Francis.

The election of the pontiff began on Wednesday, May 7. But on the first day of voting, the cardinals failed to elect a pope, which was signaled by black smoke. Only today, May 8, the conclave reached an agreement – a white house.
