Zelenskyy and Europe talk to Trump before Alaska: main points
updated
European leaders and the president Volodymyr Zelenskyy had an online conversation with the US president Donald Trump before his meeting with the dictator Vladimir Putin in Alaska. This was announced during the press conferences with Zelenskyy in Berlin, by the German chancellor Friedrich Merz.
According to the politician, the main details of the conversation with Trump are as follows:
→ Europeans have made it clear that Ukraine should be at the table if there is a meeting after the Alaska summit;
→ Europe is for the right order of actions: first a ceasefire, then a framework peace agreement can be concluded;
→ Ukraine is ready to negotiate on territorial issues, but with the front line in mind;
→ the legal recognition of the occupied territories by the Russian Federation is not discussed;
→ Kyiv should receive "reliable guarantees" of security;
→ agreed that immediately after his meeting with Putin, Trump will inform Zelenskyy and then his European partners;
→ the message conveyed to the US president – talks in Alaska should be about fundamental Ukrainian and European security interests.
"Our teams have discussed these issues [regarding the negotiations] in detail with the American side in recent days. And president Trump knows that when the United States defends Ukrainian and European interests for the sake of peace in Ukraine, he can rely on our full support," the German chancellor said.
Merz said that before the call with Trump, the partners had discussed their positions in detail. The leaders of Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Poland, Finland, Italy, and the heads of the European Commission took part Ursula von der Leyen and the European Council António Costa, secretary General of NATO Mark Rutte and president Zelensky.
After that, consultations should continue within the Coalition of the Willing, chaired by French president Emmanuel Macron and British prime minister Keir Starmer.
UPDATED. "We agreed on common principles – five principles. This is the format of negotiations: everything that concerns Ukraine should be discussed exclusively with Ukraine. We have to prepare a trilateral format of conversation. There must be a ceasefire – number one. There must be security guarantees – really reliable ones. And today, president Trump said that he supports this and that America is ready to participate", – reported Zelenskyy.
He emphasized that Russia cannot have a veto over Ukraine's integration into the EU and NATO, and added that peace talks should be combined with appropriate pressure on Russia.
"Sanctions should be strengthened if Russia does not agree to a ceasefire in Alaska. These are effective principles. It is important that they work," the Ukrainian leader said.
- At the same conference, Zelenskyy said that his position was against territorial concessions to dictator Putin in exchange for a ceasefire remains unchanged.
- French president Macron said during the call Trump says territorial issues will be discussed only by the president of Ukraine.
- Before the call, the US president called the leaders of Europe "great people" and noted that they want a peace agreement.
