Bild: Germany plans to buy two Patriot air defense systems for Ukraine from Washington

The German government plans to finance two Patriot systems for Ukraine amid the suspension of US military aid. This was reported by with reference to Bild, citing government sources.
Germany is currently "working feverishly" on an emergency solution to provide Ukraine with new defense systems and a sufficient number of missiles. Commitments are expected from the US Secretary of Defense Pete Hagel on these two Patriot systems.
According to the sources, Germany submitted the request to the Pentagon chief a few weeks ago after Ukraine unsuccessfully tried to buy the air defense system itself from the United States.
However, after the suspension of military aid to Ukraine, Berlin fears that the US may reject the German request, government officials say.
Interlocutors in the security services believe that Russia's air strikes on Ukraine are also intended to exhaust the arsenal of Patriot missiles. And the US decision made the situation "even more dramatic.".
- on July 2, it became known that the Pentagon suspended the supply of some air defense missiles and other precision munitions to Ukraine due to fears that the US arsenals had become too small.
- FT reported that part of the military aid was stopped on its way to Ukraine. The decision was made in early June, but it was implemented on July 2.
- Bloomberg noted that European allies are asking the US to explain the delay in arms deliveries to Ukraine, and according to Politico, the halt in arms deliveries came as a surprise even to Trump's allies.
- President Zelensky said that Europe will not be able to replace the US in supplying ballistic missile interceptors to Patriot. He intends to discuss suspension of aid with Trump.
