The Seoul Central District Court has sentenced former First Lady Kim Kong-hee, wife of former South Korean President Yun Seok-il, to one year and eight months in prison in a corruption case. This was reported by Yonhap.

Kim was found guilty of receiving luxurious gifts from representatives of the Unification Church religious movement in exchange for business assistance. These included Chanel handbags and a precious Graff necklace.

"The defendant abused her position for her own benefit. She did not refuse the expensive items provided in connection with the requests of the Unification Church, but instead focused on her own enrichment," the judge said during the hearing, which was broadcast live.

The special prosecutor's team demanded 15 years in prison for Kim. She was accused of conspiring with a former Deutsche Motors Co Ltd executive to manipulate shares, which allegedly brought in 810 million won ($569,400) in illegal profits between 2010 and 2012. However, the court acquitted her of this episode, citing insufficient evidence.

The court also ordered Kim to pay a fine of 12.8 million won (about $8,988).

The former first lady, who has been in custody since August, has denied all charges.

Kim and her husband became the first former presidential couple in the country's history to be imprisoned simultaneously for criminal convictions.
